Victoria's winery tourism records sparkling results
11/10/2005
Victoria's Minister for Tourism, John Pandazopoulos, today announced the State's winery tourism industry had recorded phenomenal growth.
Mr Pandazopoulos, speaking at an event at Federation Square said that the number of visitors the wine industry attracted, as well as people it employs, provided important opportunities for the tourism industry to contribute to Victoria’s economic growth. “The latest Victorian Wineries Tourism Activity Survey (VWTAS) has revealed the number of visitors to Victoria’s wineries has grown from 3.2 million to 3.6 million since 2002,” Mr Pandazopoulos said. “It has also found the estimated economic value of Victorian winery tourism is $493 million, an increase of $81 million." “These results are excellent news for the Victorian winery tourism industry, one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism in the State. It is also reflective of Victoria’s status as the Australia’s first and foremost food and wine destination, ahead of South Australia and New South Wales.” Mr Pandazopoulos also said a recent initiative, the Regional Food and Wine Tourism Development Program, would provide $200,000 over the next two years to support food and wine groups to develop and promote local produce, cafes, restaurants and wineries.

Events worth $192M for Melbourne
12/10/2005
Business events worth A$192-million have been secured for Melbourne following a strong performance by the Melbourne Convention & Visitors Bureau (MCVB) during the 2004/05 financial year. "The value of the business events we have won for Victoria is up by 25% on the previous financial year. Even more significant is the increase in economic impact of the international events we have secured, up by 55% on last year," said Garry Kingshott, CEO, MCVB. MCVB also increased the number of room nights delegates spend in Victorian hotels 25% and delegate numbers 12%. "At MCVB we continue to improve our ability to identify, bid for and convert new business for Melbourne and Victoria. These events will bring close to 48,000 delegates who will spend collectively 133,830 nights in our hotels," he said. According to Kingshott, the MCVB has heightened its focus on the competitive international meetings and convention market since the Victoria Government announced it will construct a new 5,000-seat convention centre by the end of 2008. "The new convention centre will give Melbourne the capacity to hold larger, international events. At MCVB our core objective is to win the largest and most valuable events for Melbourne and Victoria," he said. Major events won during the year include the World Psychiatric Association International Congress and the World Congress of Neuroscience both being held in 2007, the 30th International Congress of Internal Medicine in 2010 and the International Botanical Congress in 2011.

Victoria anticipates it's biggest cruise ship season yet
06/10/2005
A record 37 cruise ships will visit Victoria during the 2005/06 season, bringing 76,000 visitors to the State.
The Transport Minister, Peter Batchelor, said Victoria has made cruise shipping history, with one of P&O's most popular cruise ships - Pacific Sky making Melbourne its home port from next month for a series of five visits. On top of visits by the world renowned QEII, Melbourne will also host the Diamond Princess, which has capacity for 2,600 passengers. The Diamond Princess is scheduled to visit Melbourne eight times between January and April 2006. Regional Victoria will also share in the cruise ship visits with the clipper Odyssey set to visit Refuge Cove in Wilsons Promontory, and the Artemis to visit Phillip Island. "The State Government has been working hard to increase Victoria's cruise shipping capacity and infrastructure improvements to Station Pier in recent years are clearly paying off," Mr Batchelor said. The Minister for Tourism, John Pandazopoulos said the cruise ship industry is the fastest growing segment of the global leisure market. "The cruise shipping industry is a very important part of the Victorian tourism industry. Each ship to visit Melbourne makes an estimated $1-million contribution to the economy," he said. "Melbourne is a natural choice when you consider our excellent 24-hour airport, which can easily cater for arriving and departing passengers, our world-class hotels and our extensive range of touring options for cruise ship passengers."
