The Hills Film Group

Film Society is flourishes in the Hills:

History of "THE HILLS FILM GROUP"

The "Hills Film Group" was established mid-2004 as a community initiative by Caroline Richards and a small support team. Expressions of interest were sought through local newspapers and the Kallista Market community to begin a film group in The Hills. The response was sufficiently encouraging and the Cameo was approached with a proposal to conduct a pilot year and Burrinja was approached to auspice this not-for-profit initiative.

Cameo Cinemas and Burrinja continue to support the film group as do Reel Café who offer members a discounted coffee before or after the monthly scheduled sessions.

A number of Group members researched the History of Film in the Dandenongs and presented a night of celebration in November 2007. This was a great night with many celebrities and members and families filling the restored Cameo Cinema One.

" Bruges"
Bruges, the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray and Ken, it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks. Very much out of place the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists but the longer they stay waiting for Harry's call, the more surreal their experience becomes>>>>

2008 Anzac Dawn Service and Community March and Service
The Dawn Service
was certainly a moving event. As dawn broke over the Dandenongs ridge to the north east of the newly completed renovated and extended club rooms of the Upwey-Belgrave RSL around 1000 local residents honoured the memory of those who were killed in action and those who served in the first world war.

A moving Ceremony including a vivid account of the frontline action taken from a soldier killed in action was followed the Ode, Last Post and the Rouse played by Nikki Williams. After the conclusion of the Dawn Service many of those attending remained to partake of a simple breakfast, and to enjoy the surroundings of the clubrooms. Members were to be involved in the Anzac day Commemorative March and Service commencing at 10 a.m..

At 10 o'clock the march was led through the Main Street of Upwey by members oh HMAS Cerbrus, and band. Following the marching RSL members were many local community organizations who proceeded across the railway line and the Burwood Highway concluding at the clubrooms and Cenotaph where a commemorative Anzac day service was held. The grounds and clubrooms were packed with well over a thousand local community representatives and members of the Upwey Belgrave RSL.
The commemorative service was introduced with remarks by the RSL president Mike Banger.

Tina Carey sang a moving rendition of amazing Grace with no accompaniment, and her beautiful voice was rich in sound, as the surroundings were rich in nature. An Anzac Requiem recited by Ashley Matthews of the Upwey high school followed the hymn and the Lord's prayer was led by club secretary Terry Bull. Two guest speakers, John Page and Robert Ferguson, then addressed the gathering. (Robert had been part of the March in a First World War uniform and riding a light horse.)

Following the hymn Abide With Many there was a laying of wreaths by RSL members and representatives of many local community groups. The reading of the Ode by club president Mike Banger was followed by the Last Post the Silence and the Rouse again played by Nikki Williams.

A feature of the laying of the wreath was special recognition of the finding of the second world war wreck of the Sydney. The service concluded with a very committed singing of God Save the Queen and a flyover by the RAAF Roulettes After the conclusion of the service many remained to socialize with club members in a new club rooms and surrounds.

In speaking with a past president Lou Hesterman and present president Michael Banger the point was made that only five of six years ago they would have been surprised to have more than 25 to 50 members of the public to attend the Anzac day service. Congratulations to a committed Membership and Committee who have embraced and received the support the local community. Australian Government funding under it’s Regional Partnerships Programme helped their dream of a new clubrooms facility reach fruition.

The Upwey Belgrave RSL club wished to advise that membership is welcome and it is not necessary to have participated in or service or to have been a member of the service's. The newly established bistro open Thursday through to Saturday evenings is proving very popular with the local community.

The laying of a wreath commemorating the loss of the HMAS SYDNEY and her entire crew recognized the recent closure of this WW2 tragedy.
